If you’re considering investing in property in Bordighera and the surrounding area, you’ll be happy to know that it’s not only the sea along the rugged coastline that makes this the perfect area for a healthy and wellness-oriented lifestyle. In fact, Imperia province has the incredible good fortune to have one of the best climates in Italy and the entire world, listed at the top of Italian rankings for good weather for many years.
What’s more, the climate is one of the main ingredients for an excellent Quality of life. Yes, quality with a capital Q. A distillation of extraordinary landscapes, biodiversity, great food, art, talent, warmth and millennial history. Everything, in fact, that has made the Bel Paese and its people, with all their merits and contradictions, a symbol of the Italian approach to life and its many pleasures.
The British - who already found nineteenth-century Bordighera to be an idyllic place for the pursuit of well-being in body and mind - understood the potential of our region. And what better than to build beautiful villas surrounded by lush and fragrant Mediterranean vegetation and with spectacular views? Even today the Liberty style of their architecture adds to the charm of these places. So it’s not just about the sea, although the sea - let's face it - is the undisputed star. It’s no surprise that for many years Liguria has been the region with the highest number of Blue Flags in Italy, with a total of 34 beaches (in 2023) certified for their beauty, healthiness and sustainability.
Who says you have to choose between the sea and the mountains?
The Ponente Ligure is proof that you really don’t have to, because if you live here you can
put on your flip-flops in summer and walk to the beach and, in winter,
dust off your ski gear and be on the pistes of Limone in just over an hour.
On the other hand, if you want to enjoy the glittering atmosphere of the Côte d'Azur,
just a few kilometres of scenic road will take you there. For chic lovers of luxury,
Montecarlo is less than an hour’s drive, while to the delight of serial travellers,
Nice airport is just over 50 km away.
It was the late nineteenth century when Bordighera captured the heart of the father of Impressionism. Claude Monet found in this gem in western Liguria such evocative views and vivid colours that he feared the comparison between his paintings and reality. “These palms torment me,” he wrote, “and then the subjects are extremely difficult to reproduce, to transfer to the canvas; everywhere it’s so dense, it’s delicious to see; you can walk indefinitely under the palms, oranges, lemons and even under splendid olive trees (...). As for the blue of the sea and the sky, it's impossible.”
Whether for its scenic views, crystal-clear sea and rich biodiversity, or its unique mild climate, the lush vegetation that covers the precipitous outlines of its coast or the elegance and refinement of Liberty architecture, the fact is that ever since the nineteenth century, Bordighera has boasted of attracting people from all over the world, in search of their own place in this small corner of heaven.
